Mount Pleasant fire watch rules are different than VA and MD
Washington DC maintains different requirements than other jurisdictions in the DMV. Licensed security agencies are the only ones allowed to provide fire watch services in Washington DC. Washington DC also stands alone in mandating properties to file a fire watch plan. Whenever your building goes on fire watch, a plan needs to be submitted without delay. The fire watch plan has to include a copy of your contract with the security company supplying the fire watch security personnel.
The fire watch won't reach compliant status until the plan and contract go through review and get approved by DC Fire and EMS. Skipping this step or turning it in after the deadline can trigger penalties, so it's critical to address it when fire watch starts.

• One fire watch security guard for every two floors
• One officer positioned at the main entrance desk, alarm control station, or any central spot with a wired telephone
• One additional officer for every six fire watch personnel to manage break periods and shift changes
• A fire watch must always keep at least two officers on site at all times, never only one
Patrols Must Stay Active When the Building Is In Use
• Fire watch coverage must stay active when the building is in use.
• This encompasses operational times, after-hours activities, and intervals when employees, cleaning teams, or residents are present.
• Residential buildings are classified as occupied nonstop.
Patrol Standards
• Certified fire watch personnel must persistently monitor all affected zones.
• Patrols should take place every 30 to 60 minutes.
• Officers should stay inside the impacted locations during breaks between rounds.
• Superior fire watch services patrol every 30 minutes for peak protection.
How to Close Out a Fire Watch
• Fire watches in Washington, DC must continue until officially authorized by the Fire Marshal.
• A Fire Inspector will normally visit to confirm the system operates fully before giving approval.
• This policy covers every case — even self-initiated fire watches.
• When restoration is complete, reach out to the Fire Marshal's Office to initiate the approval process.
