In Prince William County, you are required to notify the Fire Marshal’s Office right away if a fire protection system, such as sprinklers or fire alarms, is not working. This rule ensures that safety steps like fire watch can be put in place to protect the building and everyone inside.
To follow this requirement:
• During business hours: Call the Prince William County Fire Marshal’s Office at 703-792-6360 as soon as the problem is found.
• After hours (non-emergency): Report the issue to the Department of Public Safety Communications at 703-792-6500.

Staffing Levels
• Healthcare Occupancies: One fire watch personnel per floor is required.
• Other Occupancies: One fire watch personnel per three floors is required.

• The number of persons required will be such that the entire building can be checked every hour except for Residential, Institutional (I-1, I-2 and I-3), and Education (use Group E) which must be checked every half hour.
• Residential Buildings (use Groups R-1 or R-2) & Education Institutions (use Group E): Patrols must occur every 30 minutes.
• Anyone assigned to fire watch must be properly trained for that role.
• While on duty, fire watch staff are not allowed to perform any other tasks.
• A cell phone must be available at all times to call 911 if needed.
• Fire watch staff are required to record each patrol in a fire watch log.
• Patrols must take place at least once every hour.
• A property may use its own employees for fire watch, but if they do, the property management company is fully responsible for their actions or lack of actions.
