Do’s and Don’ts for event security guards

Event security guards and event organizers occasionally encounter suspects who are behaving in an aggressive manner.   Mishandling these types of encounters could result in threats to the safety of the event and be detrimental to the success of the event. An encounter with an aggressive person can result in a brief conversation with an aggressive person’s who decides to leave or a news headline detailing assaults or other criminal activity that occurred at your event as a result of an aggressive person. An event security company  must take these encounters seriously.   Many companies offering event security services train their guards for these encounters.  The amount of training is often reflected in the event security prices organizations charge.  Encounters with aggressive persons can result in the injuries to the security guard, event organizers or even bystanders who are uninvolved in the conversation.  Event security is of particular concern for securty in Baltiomore, MD  and Washington DC.  Below are some Do’s and Don’ts when dealing with an aggressive person when providing event security or hosting any type of event.

  • Assure them that you will do your best to assist them, but do not promise any specific outcome or result of your conversation.
  • Refer to your superiors or clients as the reason for any rule that you are enforcing.

Don’ts for Event Security Guards

  • Take anything they say or do as a personal reflection of you or about how you do your job.  In most cases, these people do not have a full understand of what your job actually is.
  • Do not argue with them in any way.  Unreasonable people will continue to behave aggressively even when proven wrong.  In many cases the fact that they have been proven wrong can result in an escalation of hostility.
  • Do not include profanity in your communication with them, even when they use such words towards you.
  • Do not respond aggressively, even if they are behaving in a verbally aggressive manner.   It is important to remember that you are the reasonable professional person.  Maintain that standard in your words and act ions.
  • Do not interrupt them when they are speaking.  Allow them to finish their words. Allowing them to talk gives them the opportunity to release energy.  In many cases, simply listening and allowing them to verbally vent can resolve the situation.
