The Death of the Name Badge

As security and technology continue to evolve, the need for employees to be present at one permanent location becomes more and more obsolete.

Does this mean that soon the name badge will retire?

The short answer: no.

The world of digital is growing at an exponential rate, opening new avenues of revenue and exposure to businesses globally. Never has it been easier to purchase, research, review products or locate a business’ store, office or warehouse storage facility.

Data breaches aren’t just digital .

Security officers can be used to process guests who do not have badges.  But what can you do to deter criminals from creating their own name badge to enter your business with ease?

Security Technology

Technology will continue to innovate, create new products and evolve existing products; such as the name badge.

You may be wondering how technology can change and evolve something as simple as a name badge.

Access control

According to CSS Ltd :

  • 70% of burglaries gain access through a door
  • Premises are more than twice as likely to be burgled if they have been previously
  • Visible security measures reduce the chance that you will be burgled
  • If you do not take proper security measures afterwards, you are more likely to be a victim again in a burglary

Replacing physical keys can be an inconvenience and an unneeded financial cost to replace but not replacing them ca be a massive security risk. Failure to change the locks could leave your premises at risk should a key go missing and fall in to the wrong hands.

Access control is the fastest growing sector in the global physical security industry.

Installing an access control system can eliminate this problem. By combining an access control card with a name badge, you can kill two birds with one stone and further increase security. By issuing name badges to all members of staff, this ensures that everyone can be identified by photo, name and many other variables such as an employee number, QR code, barcode and more.

Adding access control technology to your name badge further adds a layer of security by customizing each card to have specific permissions to enter certain parts of the building. Should the name badge get misplaced, lost or stolen, once identified the name badge can be disabled and the member of staff issued a new name badge.

Attach the name badge with access control to a lanyard to ensure that the risk of loss is reduced whilst also improving usability and efficiency in navigating the building.

Security variables

Adding more than just a name and a photo to name badges is becoming the norm as businesses become a target to the ever-evolving criminal.

Using technology such as a QR code, allows flexibility in how the name badge is designed. The QR code can replace the image of the individual; when the QR code is scanned, it can take the person scanning to an image of the individual to confirm their identity.

Another technology that has been developed are custom overlays on ID card printers. For example, the Magicard Holokote which is exclusively available for Magicard ID card printers. By adding a custom watermark that is hard to replicate, this could be the icing on the cake to deter any potential criminals about wanting to try and gain access to your building.

Lanyards

Lanyards have been around for a long time. Although perhaps used for a different purpose to what they are commonly known for now.

Combining a lanyard with the name badge allows the user to carry the name badge freely without the worry of misplacing or forgetting their name badge.

Lanyards can play a key role in security from colour coding employees to their specific area or department to using personalised lanyards that are exclusively available and worn only by employees.

NFC Technology

NFC stands for near-field communication. But what does this mean?

NFC is commonly used today; think contactless payments on your credit card or even phone!

Incorporating this technology in to your name badges mean you can use it as a card that can be topped up with money to buy food and drinks from a vending machine to buying something in your cafeteria if applicable!

Conclusion

As technology continues to grow, it helps grow existing products as well. Whilst there will always be a need for businesses to have plain name badges, some businesses may want or need to innovate and optimise their name badges.

Never underestimate the impression using technologies such as access control name badges on your employees and potential visitors may have.

By making employees feel safe, secure and Urgented to use an access control system, they can work to an optimum level required.
