7 Things guards in Washington DC must have

Security companies in Washington DC send their officers to various sites.  A security guard in Washington, DC  can expect to encounter a variety of incidents on duty. From theft to vandalism, it helps to be prepared at all times. Here are a few things you should have on hand when you arrive at your work site:

1. Pocket-Sized Notepad

A notepad that can easily be slipped into your pocket is important when it comes to recording events that occur on site. Only write professionally relevant notes since they may be subpoenaed in a court case. It helps to write down things such as the time an incident occurred, direct quotes from anyone involved, and anything strange you may notice while the incident is fresh in your mind. Even the smallest detail could be useful at a later time.  This is very useful for residential security details for large properties.  It is i important to take notes as you patrol in order to share your finding with the security company that employs you and the client.

2. Ink Pens

Security officers have two primary duties…Observe and Report.  Officers cannot report properly if  they do not have a pen to us to write the report.  Carry at least two ink pens with you at all times to sign documents and complete reports. You should never have to leave your post to obtain a pen, and your location is not always guaranteed to have one on hand.

3. Flashlight

A flashlight helps you see during the dark and can also be useful during the day. Some lit rooms can become dark if the power goes out or there is a fire, so it always helps to have a light on hand.

4. Washington, DC Security Officer License

You are legally required to have a license to work as a security officer in Washington, DC, so you should always have yours ready in case someone requests to see it. You will also be asked for your license if the police are called to address an incident at your site.

5. Ironed Uniform

A clean, well-ironed uniform has visible creases on its shirts and sleeves. Your uniform should look like you just had it dry cleaned and your shoes or boots should be freshly shined. A sharp uniform commands respect and makes it easier for you to do your job. Elements of a professional security guard uniform include:

  • Pressed sleeve creases
  • Pant creases
  • Correctly fastened buttons
  • Shined shoes

6. A Belt

Professionals in some settings no longer wear belts, but they are still staples of a professional security guard uniform. Belts are essential when you are required to run or move fast on duty, and a duty belt can hold weapons and other tools you need on the job.

7. Mobile Phone

While you should avoid using your phone for texting or browsing the Internet while at work, it is helpful to have your phone on hand in case you need to call the police to report an incident. It is important to keep your phone fully charged so it can be used in an emergency. Common uses of a mobile phone on duty include:
