3 Reasons copper theft threatens construction security

In spite of the efforts of law enforcement copper theft continues to be a consistent problem.  General Contractors, developers and all other business organizations in the construction industry have no choice but to take construction security seriously.  Copper theft is an ever increasing proplem in Washington DC.  There are many ways to increase construction site security.   Here are Three reasons why copper theft is on the rise at construction sites.

1.      High copper prices Copper prices are on the rise.  Over the past decade copper prices have been at an all time high.

2.      Bad economy Though the economy is showing signs of improvement many of the gains have not been received by large sections of the population.  Those who feel that it is not possible to provide for themselves through socially acceptable means tend to create their own means outside of social norms.  To some, thievery is an acceptable option.  This situation is expected to get worse due to reductions in federal programs such as food stamps and unemployment benefits.  Unfortunately, some will inevitably choose to feed their needs by taking from others.  Copper theft provides a lucrative option.  This reality causes the industry to have legitimate concerns about construction security.

3.      Easy to do and Low risk Copper is commonly stolen from locations where no people are present such as abandoned homes and construction sites.  Construction sites are prime targets due to the fact that they are always abandoned over night, have large amounts of copper and other raw materials and usually do not have security guards.  In most cases the criminals either work at the site during the day or they are gaining information from someone who works at the site.  There have been several cases where the copper was stolen by the people who were installing it.  In these cases the would be thieves were paid to install copper during the day, ripped it out of the walls and stole it the following night, sold the stolen copper and then were paid to install more copper to replace the copper they stole.

Stolen copper can be easily sold due to the absence of serial numbers or any other method of identifying where the materials originated.  When copper is stolen thieves pay no attention to the damage that is done.  Costs of damages exceed the cost of the copper.  Costs include material and labor costs of repairing damage caused in the process of stealing the copper.  Without the presence of security guards providing construction security services, copper is easy to steal and easy to sell. The solution….Hire security guards to protect your construction site.  If you need a secuirty company in Washington DC , Maryland, or Virginia
